"Had the steak Rossini and it was excellent, not had one better. The service was spot on and the surroundings are comfortable and not over pretentious.
We would thoroughly recommend anyone to try the Star."

"Food is amazing & good value. We have 2 children who are very fussy eaters, they didnt fancy anything off the menu so we asked the chef for something that wasnt on the menu, the chef was happy to do that, the children loved the meal & asked the chef for the recipe which he wrote out for us. We now go whenever we can."

"I was landlord at the Star from 1986 to 2000 and it's great to see the old place doing so well and looking so fine. In answer to Dave Marsh's posting the pub was built in 1830 to serve the workers at the tannery opposite, now a row of terraced cottages (Tanpit). We converted the Stables in 1992 and had 3 times National winner Red Rum open it on 4th October 1992. Many years ago that part of the building was a stable and shire horses were stabled there. They were hired out to farmers just to help pull their horses and carts up the steep hill fully laden on their way to Liverpool markets.
During the building of the kitchen a French juggernaut driver reversed into the big car park at the front to ask directions to the Tarmac factory in Appley Bridge. As he was pulling out his rear wheels hit the stone wall parallel to the first car bay. The wall moved about a foot. Luckily we had a stone mason on site building the big fireplace and he repaired the wall. At the time, I had a beard and he carved what was supposed to be my face in to a piece of stone and put it on the side of the wall facing the first bay as a joke. Everyone including my wife knew about this apart from me. Some years later a history teacher brought it to my attention and suggested it was a valuable ancient artifact and I believed him. Only when we left in 2000 did my wife tell me truth.
Hope that gives you a bit more info.
Oh yes, the pub was initially called "The procession of the Lord High Sheriff in 1805" Luckily, they changed it to the Star Inn.
Great to see all the compliments above. Best wishes to those at Star"

"A friend recommended your restaurant when I was recently staying in Shevington. We enjoyed it so much that we had lunch there twice even taking a 2 hour walk from Shevington on the second occasion.
I always submit a few photographs to wiganworld Photo-a-Day after my visits but cannot find any historical information re The Star Inn such as age etc... I wonder if you knew anything of the history of the lovely building?"
Dave Marsh
"excellent lunchtime menu, 2 courses £7.95, freshly cooked, lovely brigt restuarant, although some refurbishment still going on this did not distract our attention"

"In my view, The Star is one of the best restaurants in Wigan. The welcome is friendly, its menus are imaginative (without being pretentious) and the food is always excellent. I’ve never yet had a meal at The Star that has fallen below my expectations. The Star is a place that takes its food seriously, it shows in the quality of its offerings and I would – and do – recommend the place to anyone that enjoys eating out."
Chris
